Bilingual Brilliance: How Reading Supports LanguageWize’s ELL Learners

Why books are powerful tools for building both languages — not just English

At LanguageWize, we celebrate bilingualism. In fact, we think it’s a superpower.

Speaking more than one language doesn’t just open up more doors, it strengthens how we think, how we connect, and how we learn. But for many children learning English as an additional language (ELL), parents often worry: “Will learning English weaken their home language?” or “Should I only read in English to help them catch up?”

Here’s the good news: reading supports both languages, and more importantly, it supports your child’s overall language development in ways that last a lifetime.

Bilingualism is a Gift — Let’s Grow It

Children don’t need to “replace” one language with another. They’re fully capable of becoming strong speakers in two (or more!) languages, especially when we support both at home and in the classroom.

The skills they build in their first language (like recognising sounds, telling stories, or understanding how grammar works) transfer beautifully to English. That’s why we always encourage parents to keep speaking, and reading, in their home language. It’s not just allowed. It’s essential.

Books Build Bridges Between Languages

Reading plays a huge role in helping bilingual children succeed, not just in English, but in their home language too. How?

  • Vocabulary grows in both languages. When children understand a concept in one language (say, “volcano”), they’re more likely to connect it to the word in the other language (“volcán” or “vulcano”). Reading builds this bridge.
  • Grammar becomes more intuitive. Kids start noticing how sentence structures work in different languages. That’s how they begin switching between languages with ease, a brilliant skill called code-switching.
  • Stories strengthen thinking skills. When kids hear the same story in two languages, they compare, connect, and understand ideas more deeply. This boosts comprehension, memory, and even creativity.

Celebrate Both Languages at Home

Want to support your child’s bilingual journey? Read in both languages. Don’t be afraid to mix things up, read one book in English, another in your home language. Or even better, find bilingual books with both languages side-by-side.

Ask questions, compare words, talk about the story in whatever language comes naturally. Language is about connection, not perfection.

And remember: if your child sees you valuing both languages, they will too.

Bilingual Readers Are Flexible Thinkers

Here’s something amazing: research shows that bilingual children are often better at tasks that require focus, switching attention, and solving problems creatively. Why? Because managing two languages strengthens the brain’s “executive function”, the mental muscles that help us plan, shift gears, and stay organised.

Reading regularly in both languages fuel that flexibility even more. It gives children tools to express themselves in richer, more nuanced ways, and to understand others more deeply.
