A CEO’s Guide to Acing Behavioural Interview Questions
Interviewing for a senior leadership role, whether Managing Director, CEO, or another executive position, is no small feat. At this level, interviewers don’t just want to know your qualifications or career history. They want insight into how you lead, make critical decisions, and overcome complex challenges.
Behavioural interview questions are crafted for this very purpose. You’ll often hear questions like:
“Describe a time when you had to steer your organisation through a significant crisis.”
“Tell me about a situation where you made a tough strategic decision.”
If English isn’t your first language, answering these can feel daunting. But the STAR method is your best ally to respond clearly, confidently, and impressively.
What is the STAR Method? A Breakdown for Senior Leaders
The STAR method is a structured way to respond to behavioural questions by covering four key points:
Situation
Describe the specific event or context you were in. It’s important to focus on a particular situation, not a general overview of your work history, so the interviewer can fully understand the circumstances. This could be from a past job, a volunteer role, or any relevant leadership experience.
Task
Explain the task you needed to complete. What was your objective? Highlight any challenges, constraints, deadlines, or issues that made this task important or difficult.
Action
Outline the actions you personally took to address the situation. Keep the focus on your role, showing leadership, initiative, teamwork, and integrity. What specific steps did you take to move things forward?
Result
Describe the outcome of your actions. Be proud to take credit for your leadership. What happened in the end? What did you accomplish? Include multiple positive results if possible, achievements, improvements, cost savings, or successful delivery. Even if the result wasn’t perfect, explaining what you learned or how you adapted shows strength.
The STAR method helps you structure your answers in a way that demonstrates your experience clearly and effectively, especially in high-pressure senior interviews.
Key Tips to Nail Every Part of the STAR Method
To truly master the STAR method, it’s essential to follow all four parts carefully — Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Be as specific as possible without rambling or overloading your answer with unnecessary details. Remember, less is often more when it comes to clarity and impact.
Often, candidates forget to include the result unless prompted. Make it a point to always highlight the outcome proactively, this is where you show the tangible value of your leadership.
Be mindful about the examples you choose. Avoid any stories that don’t present you in a positive light. That said, sharing a situation with a challenging or negative outcome can work well if it demonstrates your resilience and ability to learn under pressure.
How to Prepare Your STAR Stories
- Reflect on recent situations that showcase your leadership, teamwork, initiative, planning, or strategic decision-making, whether from work experience, volunteering, or relevant projects.
- Prepare brief but detailed descriptions for each story and be ready to elaborate if the interviewer asks for more.
- Ensure each story has a clear beginning, middle, and end, covering the situation, task, your specific actions, and the positive outcome or key learning.
- Make sure the result reflects well on you, even if the final outcome wasn’t ideal, focus on what you achieved or learned.
- Always be honest. Don’t exaggerate or leave out important details. Interviewers will sense if a story doesn’t have a solid foundation.
- Avoid generalising across multiple events. Instead, provide a focused account of a single event with clear details.
- Finally, vary your examples across different areas of your professional and personal life to show a well-rounded leadership profile.
A STAR Example for Senior Leadership

Situation
“In 2022, during an unexpected supply chain disruption caused by geopolitical tensions, our manufacturing operations came to a near halt.”
Task
“As CEO, my responsibility was to maintain business continuity while safeguarding our brand and supporting our employees.”
Action
“I assembled a cross-functional crisis management team, explored alternative suppliers, communicated transparently with clients and staff, and invested in digital supply chain tools to improve future resilience.”
Result
“Within three months, we restored 90% of our production capacity, retained client trust, and improved supply chain visibility by 30%, ensuring we were better prepared for future disruptions.”
